This one thing helped Taylor Swift successfully combat anxietyThis one thing helped Taylor Swift successfully combat anxietyIm sort of out of touch with the warp and woof of the music industry these days, but I understand Taylor Swift to be a pretty well-regarded figure in pop culture-complete with all the fixings.Started in a small town, acoustic guitar, humble beginnings, Grammys, Kanye West interruptions and passive-aggressivefeuds, etc.Whetherbei or not youre a fan, its always nice to know that pipe dreams do sometimes turn into realities.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreAdditionally, we can all empathize, albeit on a much smaller scale, with the panic that tails success. It can feel, at times, if you let your anxiety get the better of you like everybodys waiting for you to really mess up and then youll be done,Swift toldGlamour Magazine a few years back.Swift more recently s at down with Elle Magazine to talk about all the things she learned before she says goodbye to her twenties later this year.Number 15 of her list of 30 was her use of supplements to help her better combat anxiety. Vitamins make me feel so much better I take L-theanine, which is a natural supplement to help with stress and anxiety, she said. Not too long agoLadders reported on the rise of nootropics. The natural brain-boosting supplements have been studied to yield pretty consistent effects, especially when coupled with other healthy dietary habits and physical activity.Theanine is an amino acid that is known for its ability to reach the brain quickly by reason of its structure. In companion with caffeine, it provides a remarkable enhancement to cognition. According to a study, L-theanine and caffeine in combination are beneficial for improving performance on cognitively demanding tasks. It mitigates the effects of anxiety by reducing its symptoms, like a racing heart for instance an d elevated blood pressure.Unlike most conventional anti-anxiety medication, the reduction of anxiety thatL-Theanine engenders does not come at the cost of alertness. New Glassdoor Report Reveals Diversity Will Be Major HR Focus in 2018
New Glassdoor Report Reveals Diversity Will Be Major HR Focus in 2018New Glassdoor Report Reveals Diversity Will Be Major HR Focus in 2018 As we look ahead to the new year, career experts and recruiting professionals make predictions on trends for 2018. In addition to the increasing trend of hiring informed candidates , new data suggests that diversity initiatives will be prioritized within both U.S. and U.K. companies.According to new data from Glassdoor , one in three (35 percent) hiring decision makers expect to increase investment in diversity and inclusion efforts. The report, conducted among 750 hiring decision makers (those in recruitment, HR and responsible for hiring) in the U.S. and UK, also finds that job candidate demographics are one of the fruchtwein important recruiting metrics to hiring decision makers.Driving toward greater diversity in the workplace is a high priority effort for many businesses, said Carmel Galvin, chief human resources officer o f Glassdoor. With increased investment in diversity and inclusion programs , it signals that employers are recognizing the value these efforts are having on recruiting and on financial performance. This latest report follows years of many companies, especially in the tech sector, being criticized for their lack of diversit y in the workplace. However, the unique difference now is that businesses and those in recruitment have quantitative data revealing the lack of investment in diversity and inclusion is a barrier in attracting and hiring quality candidates.Nearly three in five (59 percent) hiring decision makers report that this diversity shortcoming has presented a significant hiring challenge. Furthermore, Glassdoors report revealed that candidate demographics are more important than recruiting data points like how long it takes to fill a role how long it takes to deliver a job offer and the success a company has in converting job seekers to applicants, and applicants to hires.I n todays era of the informed candidate , job seekers are hungry for as much information about a company as possible before they take a job. Job seekers want insights into what businesses are doing to build a workforce that is diverse in all aspects of the word be it age, gender, ethnicity or thought, added Galvin. The 2018 trend towards diversity and inclusion investments presents an opportunity for employers to highlight their diversity and show job seekers their true values . Plus, the investment will benefit the organization ultimately. 52 percent of respondents also say that achieving success in the realms of diversity inclusion will improve the quality of hires. Better hires make for a better business.Guess we know one new years resolution employers will make. And we look forward to the renewed focus on diversity and inclusion in the US and U.K.

This is why self-appreciation is the foundation of life
This is why self-appreciation is the foundation of lifeThis is why self-appreciation is the foundation of lifeYoure either self-appreciating or self-depreciating. There is no middle.? Lana M. H. WilderThe end of the year is deceiving . This fictional boundary puts our focus on the future?- ?we all think about improving ourselves.Your life is like a house. Theres leidhing wrong with dreaming about having nicer windows or changing the colors of the walls. But if the foundation is not strong enough, the house wont hold the weight?- ?it will collapse. When you dream to become someone else, you stop valuing who you are.Self-appreciation is the foundation of a happy life. Without it, you cant build a bigger you.You become who you say you areWhat lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us. Ralph Waldo EmersonSelf-growth is about becoming the best version of yourself, not someone else. Appreciating who you are is the secret for a strong foundation? - ?you can build on top of what you already are.Self-Appreciation is not self-esteem, as I explain here?- ?its not about feeling special but accepting your uniqueness instead. Our society is rooted in high self-esteem?- ?it pushes us to be special, unique, and above average.Thats why we focus too much on whats visible?- ?the exterior. And pay little attention to our foundation. Pursuing self-esteem is directly linked to anxiety and depression disorders?- ?the more you want to become someone else, the less you can value yourself. We were taught to feel unworthy and undeserving?- ?we become what others say we are.As Jon Kabat-Zinn, the man who brought mindfulness into the mainstream, explains Perhaps we just need little reminders from time to time that we are already dignified, deserving, worthy. Sometimes we dont feel that way because of the wounds and the scars we carry from the past, or because of the uncertainty of the future.Research shows that we tend to see ourselves through the eyes of others?- ?we find it difficult to separate how we perceive ourselves and how our imaginary audience does. This exaggerated sense of being on stage all the time, results in harsher self-criticism.It is doubtful that we came to feel undeserving on our own. We were helped to feel unworthy. We were taught it in a thousand ways when we were little, and we learned our lessons well.?- ?Kabat-Zinn continuesSelf-esteem is contingent on an idealized version of success created by others?- ?when things dont go as expected, our life collapses.Unfortunately, high self-esteem wont rescue you from stress, anxiety, or depression. Feeling special is not enough to fix a broken foundation.Self-Compassion Is Not SelfishSelf-appreciation is not the same as self-pity or self-indulgence?- ?it doesnt mean living in a me-centered world. When people feel pity about themselves, they become immersed in their own problems and think they are the only ones suffering. Self-pity is about playing the victim in your life?- ?you get stuck blaming others and lose control of your destiny.Self-indulgence is escapism?- ?you get distracted to avoid taking care of yourself.Self-centered people live in a me-me-me world?- ?they believe everything revolves around them. When people cant appreciate themselves, they become desperate for external appreciation.A healthy relationship with yourself requires a balanced perspective. As Malcolm Forbes said, Too many people overvalue what they are not and undervalue what they are.Appreciation is critical?- ?it refers to valuing who you are and what you do.Its not about becoming someone different but appreciating who you already are. You are at peace with your own company?- ?you acknowledge your beliefs, trust your instincts, and accept both your flaws and successes.Self-Appreciation is recognizing the value that lies within you.Honor your uniquenessYou are a wonderful manifestation. The whole universe has come together to make your existence possible.?- ?Thic h Nhat HahnLove who you are without having to pretend you are someone you are not.We all want to feel special, but we are not. Bragging about your achievements is as self-centered as feeling pity for your problems. Self-Appreciation is about consciously acknowledging the positive within you without the need to compare yourself to others. We usually focus more on negative thoughts rather than positive ones?- ?thats why we narrow our inner-perception. We either get stuck on that negative self-image or exaggerate our good traits to offset negativity.Kabat-Zinn encourages us to develop an appreciation for the richness of life and the inevitability of all its dilemmas, sorrows, tragedies and ironies.Zinn reminds us that life is always in flux?- ?nothing is neither permanent nor perfect. Life is full of good experiences as well as the little things that go wrong. We must confront and come to terms with what is most human in ourselves?- ?your ideas, thoughts, possessions, relationships, emo tions, bodies, everything. When you appreciate yourself, its easier to appreciate others. Lack of self-acceptance is why people have enemies?- ?its impossible to accept other peoples uniqueness if you cant honor yours. As Jon Kabat-Zinn says, Note that this journey is uniquely yours, no one elses. So the path has to be your own. You cannot imitate somebody elses journey and still be true to yourself.Practicing positive self-talk and being more appreciative can expand your inner-perception?- ?You create new neural pathways that lead to positive thoughts. Some people believe that a positive approach to change can hinder our growth. Appreciation doesnt mean being naif or overly-optimistic?- ?its about making your foundation stronger so you can continue building on top.Genuine appreciation of self develops a sense of humility and sensitivity?- ?we acknowledge that we all have strengths and weaknesses. You embrace your goodness without becoming overconfident or arrogant.Spend Time Listening to YourselfMaybe the fear is that we are less than we think we are when the actuality of it is that we are much much more.?- ?Jon Kabat-ZinnSelf-compassion is the ability to be kind and considerate to yourself. Its not something you can develop overnight?- ?you have to erase the voice of your inner audience before you can listen to your own.Practicing meditation helps train the mind?- ?you become more familiar with yourself. Neuroscience shows that meditating regularly not only reduces stress and anxiety?- ?it changes your brain for the better.Meditation is not about improving yourself, but to simple realize where you are?- ?rather than looking into the future, you focus in the here and now. By being present, you start acknowledging your foundation.Thupten Jinpa, the Dalai Lamas English translator, explains that to create a more compassionate world, we must first practice kindness towards ourselves. He provides a roadmap to greater self-acceptance.Listen to your inner-voice pay att ention to both your negative and positive thoughts. Become aware of self-criticism recognize that thoughts are just constructs. Explore how to reframe negative judgments into more compassionate ones.Incorporate an intention practice You just need two minutes in the morning. Jinpa encourages you to quietly affirm, This day, I will make my day meaningful. I will as much as possible try to bring conscious intention into my interaction with others. I will as much as possible when the opportunity arises, be kind to others and at least refrain from harming others. Ill be more mindful. Ill be caring and concerned for other people in my life. In this way, Ill make my day meaningful.Practice self-acceptance exercises Jinpa covers a wide range of exercises?- ?from simple to harder ones?- ?to help you practice compassion toward yourself and others. Check out his book or this post I wrote with some self-acceptance exercises and resources.Imagine yourself as a child When we reconnect to our inne r-child, its easier to embrace our vulnerability. Self-Appreciation requires to stop seeing ourselves through a perfectionist lens and choose a kind one instead.Listen to your narrative The stories we tell ourselves about ourselves shape our identity. Thus, self-appreciation depends on our narrative. If, when reliving something that happened, you decide to play the role of a victim, you become the victim. Reflect on your narrative. Are you telling the story as it happened or in an overly negative or positive way?The Foundation of a Better WorldDont ask yourself what the world needs, ask yourself what makes you come alive. And then go and do that. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive. Howard Washington ThurmanLow self-esteem is a cultural creation. The Dalai Lama is a wise observer of the human mind, yet he was shocked to learn that low self-esteem may be pervasive in Western society. His response was to encourage people to acknowledge their own self-worth?- ?we m ust realize our goodness so we can see other peoples too.Self-Appreciation?- ?being compassionate and loving ourselves?- ?is not only the foundation of our lives its the foundation of a better world. The stronger it is, the more we can build together. The world needs you. Dont succumb to the external pressure to be someone else?- ?become the best version of yourself. The Interview Questions You Shouldnt Ask During a Job Interview - Spark Hire
The Interview Questions You Shouldnt Ask During a Job Interview - Spark HireEmployers rely heavily on job interviews to help give them an accurate look at what the candidate in front of them is all about. But while its okay to get a little abstract during an interview (How many people are currently working at Google now?), there are some areas you should avoid at all costs. Some topics to avoid includeQuestions about genderInquiries about a parts gender should be avoided, as they can make it seem as if the persons gender impacts the decision about their employment. Other questions that should be avoided include do you have any children? or do you want to have kids? Though these may seem harmless and conversational, they may signify a bias. Instead, an employer should keep questions strictly job-related. If the potential employee chooses to bring up their family life, thats fine. Otherwise, the topic is off limits.Marital position inquiriesAsking about a persons relationship status is actually against the law. This also goes for questions about sexual orientation and current living arrangements. Employees are protected by law on the basis of marital status and sexual orientation, so asking about these issues should be avoided. Instead, a hiring manager could ask if the individual has any travel or relocation restrictions. This question is pertinent to the persons ability to do the job successfully, but does not hone in on their relationship status.Questions about raceAsking about someones race during a job interview is illegal. An employer hoping to find out about a persons citizenship status should instead ask, Are you authorized to work in the United States? or Can you provide proof of your authorization to work in the United States? This gives all of the information the hiring manager needs to know, without violating the interviewees rights.Asking about a persons disability statusAn employer legally cannot ask about a persons health or disability status durin g an interview. Not only are questions like Have you ever suffered from a disability? illegal, theyre also offensive and may cause a potential employee to look elsewhere instead. A hiring manager who wants to make sure the employee can handle the physical elements of a job should simply ask this directly. As a general rule, it is only appropriate for a hiring manager to ask questions that directly pertain to a job. Though it may seem as if these other inquiries are just part of casual conversation, they are prohibited by law and may even make a top candidate uncomfortable. For those looking to gather information about a persons qualifications and abilities, it is best to focus simply on work. Let the interviewee bring it up voluntarily, but dont ask on your own.How do you get the information you need during an interview without violating a potential hires rights or creating an uncomfortable situation? October 2018 JOLTS Report Update
October 2018 JOLTS Report Update October 2018 JOLTS Report Update Here is a summary of key data from the just-released Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS) report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS): The number of job openings changed little to 7.1 million in October, up from 7.0 million in September. The number of people hired went up slightly to 5.9 million, and the number of people who voluntarily or involuntarily left their jobs saw minimal changes at 5.6 million. The number of employees who quit their jobs was little changed at 3.5 million. The number of people laid off or who otherwise left their companies involuntarily was the same as September at 1.7 million. In the last 12 months, ending in October, people hired totaled 67.8 million and people who left their jobs, voluntarily or involuntarily, totaled 65.3 million â" a net employment gain of 2.5 million. Itâs the time of year when many companies are hiring seasonal workers, and this trend is reflected in the latest JOLTS report: Job vacancies were higher at 7.1 million in October, according to the JOLTS survey, well above the number of unemployed people in the same time period at just above 6 million. The ratio of unemployed people per job opening was 0.9 in October, a new low. The bottom line: Thereâs less than one available candidate per open job in the U.S. at the moment. Whether you want to add temporary staff to help with seasonal fluctuations or you need full-time team members, significant competition for top talent continues to make hiring a challenging prospect for many employers. JOLTS report takeaway: Focus on retention For employers, retention is key in a competitive hiring environment. Here are some of our top tips: Check compensation. Itâs not a surprising piece of advice, but itâs an important one. Highly skilled employees have many options right now, so regularly check salaries to make sure they are in line with your industry and region. Offer spot bonuses for outstanding work if itâs in your budget. To compare your salaries against starting salaries for similar companies in your area, be sure to download our Salary Guides. Offer training. Most workers want to continually build their skills, which is critical to remaining relevant in a fast-moving business environment. Help improve each team memberâs leadership, interpersonal or technical skills by offering compensation for relevant training courses, whether online or at a nearby college. Check in. Are team members challenged in their roles? What are their professional goals, and how can you help them reach them? These are questions you should ask each person on your team. Managers who express genuine interest in the career goals of team members, and help them reach those objectives, have an easier time retaining top employees. Remember that retention strategies donât have to be expensive. Check out these low-cost ways to keep your team happy and motivated now and into 2019. Hiring? One of the top tips from our recruiters in a competitive environment is to speed up your hiring process. When candidates have multiple options, they may accept an offer from another company while youâre considering whether or not to ask them in for that fifth interview. Donât delay an offer if the candidate is a good match for the job and they have strong references. START HIRING NOW New year, new job? Given the JOLTS report quit rate numbers, many workers are feeling confident about finding new positions if they arenât satisfied with their current ones. If youâre one of them, now is a great time to update your LinkedIn profile and application materials so youâre ready for a job hunt in the new year. Words of Advice from our Founding Fathers
Words of Advice from our Founding Fathers Words of Advice from our Founding Fathers This day will be filled with barbecues, family and friends getting together and many, many fireworks displays. And although all of these activities are fun, we certainly should not forget to reflect upon the true reason this day is such an important one in our nationâs history: freedom. And more specifically, July 4 represents the idea, pursuit and accomplishment of freedom. Our Founding Fathers had an idea that the 13 colonies now established in North America should be free to unite and govern themselves totally separate from the authority and reign of Great Britain. Many Americans fought and died for this idea of freedom, and the opportunities we all have in America today are credited to those who came before us who not only had this idea of freedom, but were bold enough to pursue it. Our world is full of leaders and experts who offer their advice and expertise when it comes to life, pursuing oneâs goals, happiness and education. Yet, today in honor of the men who set the stage for us, Recruiter.com wants to share some âexpert adviceâ about life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness from our Founding Fathers. Below is a compilation of quotes from the men who dared who to believe in the idea of freedom and had the courage to pursue it- words of wisdom from the first dreamers, activists, businessmen, politicians, educators and creatives that most of us aspire to one day be: âYou will probably have but a short time to live. Before you launch into eternity, it behooves you to improve the time that may be allowed you in this world.â-Thomas McKean âEnergy and persistence conquer all things.â-Benjamin Franklin âOld minds are like old horses; you must exercise them if you wish to keep them in working order.â-John Adams âEvery human being has a work to carry on within, duties to perform abroad, influence to exert, which are peculiarly his, and which no conscience but his own can teach.â-William Ellery âA fondness for power is implanted, in most men, and it is natural to abuse it, when acquired.â-Alexander Hamilton âA strong body makes the mind strong. As to the species of exercises, I advise the gun. While this gives moderate exercise to the body, it gives boldness, enterprise and independence to the mind. Games played with the ball, and others of that nature, are too violent for the body and stamp no character on the mind. Let your gun therefore be your constant companion of your walks.â-Thomas Jefferson âStand upright, speak thy thoughts, declare the truth thou hast, that all may share; Be bold, proclaim it everywhere: They only live who dare.â-Lewis Morris âTo succeed, jump as quickly at opportunities as you do at conclusions.â-Benjamin Franklin âI always considered an idle Life, as a real evil, but, a life of such hurry, such constant hurry, leaves us scarcely a moment for reflection or for the discharge of any other then the most immediate and pressing concerns.â-Edward Rutledge âKnowledge is, in every country, the surest basis of public happiness.â-George Washington

7 Job Search Tips We Always Forget
7 Job Search Tips We Always Forget 7 Job Search Tips We Always Forget These job search tips are so simple thatonce you read them, you may be frustrated to know you had not tried them, yet. Whether you apply for job seekers online or troll all the websites people use to find jobs, these obvious job search tips will always be helpful. 1. If you are not on LinkedIn, you do not exist Approximately 94% of recruiters use LinkedIn to screen job candidates. It is their primary research tool, so get your professional profile set up on LinkedIn. Next, use it to your advantage. Communicate with people at companies during your job search. If recruiters are logging in to find qualified candidates each day in one specific place, you want to be in that one place. Job search tip: Out of all social media platforms, LinkedIn is by far the most powerful for people searching for jobs, career networkingand connecting with recruiters. If you do not believe in using social media, you should at least be on LinkedIn for the purpose of âbeing foundâ. 2. Thank youâs matter There will always be automated ways of saying, âThank youâ, but avoid using these. Be human. Be nice and write a note that shows you have interpersonal skills and know how to engage others. The process of applying online for jobs is pretty cold as it stands today. So now, imagine it comes down to you and another candidate after the entire process that started with an online form and ended with the final interview. You always want to be the memorable person who goes the extra mile to show appreciation. Job search tip: Write an original thank you note that is not pre-filled out on the platform or any other automated method. Show people you have a brain and a heart. The more you get used to writing notes like this, the better you improve your interpersonal and writing skills. 3. Accept that you will never bore anyone into hiring you If you have ever been in a job interview where it seems like hiring managers are falling asleep, chances are your answers were boring. In order to get a job, your interview with a hiring manager has to leave a positive impression. If all they did was ask, âTell me about yourselfâ, and you ranted for the next 20 minutes, that is a problem. Job search tip: Practice your interview answers to make sure you come across as endearing and memorable, not polished and boring. Your âperfect resumeâ will not get you the job. Your personality will, especially if your resume shows you to be qualified. 4. Remember that your resume is not a tattoo and neither is your LinkedIn profile One of the smartest ways to get a job is to have a resume for each specific career focus. When you apply to job applications online, or offline, resumes are not one-size-fits-all. Applying for Corporate Development jobs when your resume focuses on Investment Banking is a waste of time. Job search tip: Be ready to change your resume at the drop of a hat. It is a good idea to have three or four resumes on hand when applying for jobs. 5. Donât limit yourself to online applications Online job applications can be time-consuming and take you away from face to face networking. The odds of getting a job through online applications are slim, so you cannot count on them 100% of the time. Job search tip: In order to get a job, you have to talk to people face to face and through LinkedIn networking. Never commit to only one method. The majority of âdream jobsâ happen because people were talking to others within their desired industry. 6. Make your resume painfully obvious Your resume has a problem the second it provokes the question, âWhat do you do exactly?â Job search tip: When you apply online, or in person, your resume should never create any doubt or confusion. If hiring managers do not see an obvious answer to the question, âWhat does this person do?â, the resume has a problem. 7. Ask not what your employer can do for you. Ask what you can do for your employer The interviewer only cares about what you can do for them, even when they ask you about yourself. Certainly, they care about what you want, but only after you establish your worth. First, you must demonstrate why you bring value to the business. Job search tip: Make your interview all about them. Itâs not about you. Why we forget these job search tips It is very easy to forget the most practical advice while staying busy with a job search. There are millions of search results on Google with advice for job seekers, but when it comes down to finding a job, the simplesttextbook advice always works best.

The Crisis That Helped Obama Crush McCain
The Crisis That Helped Obama Crush McCain The Crisis That Helped Obama Crush McCain By now you know: in yesterdays presidential election Senator Barack Obama crushed Senator John McCain in both the Electoral College and the popular vote to become the 44th President of the United States and first African-American chief of the country. Given the record number of people voting, wide margin of victory and Obama winning a handful of swing states, numerous issuessuch asthe war in Iraq, health care, race, the environment, energy anda guy named G.W. Bushmust have played a part in the monumental victory for American Democrats and for civil rights throughout the world. But its likely that none played a bigger part than the financial crisis, which has plagued the U.S. since the summer of 2007 and hit a boiling point this past September, just prior to the first presidential debate. The nearly unbelievable collapses of Bear Stearns, Lehman Brothersand Washington Mutual, the near demises of AIG, Freddie Mac, Fannie Mae, Merrill Lynch, Morgan Stanley and Wachovia, the death of the i ndependent investment bank, hundreds of billions in bad debt write-downs, hundreds of thousands of layoffs, the blood bath that hedge funds have taken, and that little thing called a $700 billion bailout package that the Fed was forced to create all played a huge part in Obamas landslide victory last night. As the election neared and more and more economic problems surfaced, it became clear that there werent just a few small holes in the current government oversight of the U.S. financial system, there were mile-wide gapswhich were too large for anyone to hide, including the political partythat's been inhabiting 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue for the past eight years, and whichfit perfectly into the game plan ofa manknown asthe voice of change.

The ALJ Exam Preparing for the All New Online Component
The ALJ Exam Preparing for the All New Online Component The ALJ Exam Preparing for the All New Online Component The ALJ Exam: Preparing for the All New Online Component BREAKING NEWS: Congratulations, if you are invited to the Online Component. We recommend our ALJ Writing Guide to review the 13 ALJ Competencies! We also recommend our Structured Interview practice if you are invited to the Structured Interview component of the ALJ Examination. Our new ALJ Guide Book is an essential read for candidates! In the book: Two Federal Resume samples and the sample Litigation and Administrative Narratives will help you write the application! Application Writing and Test Preparation for Administrative Law Judge Candidates Authors: Nicole Schultheis and Kathryn Troutman 2nd Edition now available in eBook and print ($49.95) Best deal: Book and Webinar combo ($149.00) Immediate Delivery Purchase Now Some (but not all) qualified federal Administrative Law Judge candidates have received an email from OPM inviting them to sit for the Online Component of the examination process. The new ALJ exam measures 13 Competencies, compared to the 6 Competencies addressed when the exam was last opened, in 2009. The competencies include: Decision Making, Interpersonal Skills, Judicial Analysis, Judicial Decisiveness, Judicial Management, Judicial Temperament, Litigation and Courtroom Competence, Oral Communication, Problem Solving, Professionalism, Reasoning, Self-Management, and Writing. None of these are expressly defined in this yearâs announcement. Candidates may sample the Situational Judgment Test and Writing Exercise online. The 2013 exam is the first to administer an avatar-driven Situational Judgment Test, and it is the first to include a timed, online writing exercise. Although candidates will not be able to access the Situational Judgment test or complete the writing exercise until the April 29-May 10 window opens, a sample is provided here: https://www.usajobsassess.gov/assess/default/sample/Sample.action?ALJSampleForm. This sample reveals that the SJT will be used to assess 6 of the 13 competencies: decision making, interpersonal skills, judicial management, judicial temperament, litigation and courtroom competence, and problem solving. (Note: some but not all of these 6 were tested for via narrative response in 2009.) Unfortunately, there is no OPM preview of the Experience Assessment. The online sample does not discuss Section 3- the Experience Assessment portion of the Online Component- nor does it define the competencies. We are left with the language from the announcement itself: Section 3: Experience Assessment The Experience Assessment includes multiple-choice and open-ended questions about work experience that is related to ALJ positions. Applicants select a multiple-choice response and write a narrative response, as appropriate, to indicate and document their experience associated with the targeted competency. The Experience Assessment is not timed. At this point, candidates should be preparing CCAR narratives (accomplishment stories in the Context-Challenge-Actions-Results format) relating to all 13 competencies so that to-the-point examples are ready for each of them. As of the date of this writing, we donât know what the character limits will be or whether 13 separate narratives will be required. Nevertheless we are coaching applicants through this process and working to build compelling narratives that fairly address this entire set of competencies. The Resume Place wants you to be ready to go with well-polished, relevant and recent examples in the narrative format that OPM likes. And even if you donât use all of these narratives for the online component, you will have paved the way for a successful structured interview, and will have given serious thought to issues and ideas that will be tested elsewhere in the exam. Fortunately, The Resume Placeâs experts have compiled accepted definitions for all 13 ALJ competencies- and we can help candidates craft compelling narratives. Perhaps the hardest competency to explain is âJudicial Temperament.â OPM hasnât defined this term, so how do we know what it is? Well, weâve researched it. The American Bar Association Standing Committee on the Federal Judiciary evaluates the professional qualifications of nominees to the federal courts- covering Article III judges but not ALJs. Still, its views are worth heeding. The ABA measures judicial temperament based on a nomineeâs compassion, decisiveness, open-mindedness, courtesy, patience, freedom from bias, and commitment to equal justice under the law. In his 2007 book, The Supreme Court: The Personalities and Rivalries That Defined America, noted author and legal commentator Jeffrey Rosen quotes Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts: I think judicial temperament is a willingness to step back from your own committed views of the correct jurisprudential approach and evaluate those views in terms of your role as a judgeâ¦. Its the difference between being a judge and being a law professor, and appreciating that its not so much a question of analytical coherence or overview, its more a question of where this fits in with the Courts established body of law. And how its going to be received as law. Rosen opines that judicial temperament requires a judge to step away from personal ideologies and factor in the Courts institutional role, in the interests of consensus and stability. Here are definitions for all 13 Competencies: Competency 1 Decision Making From 2009 ALJ Announcement: Makes sound, well-informed, objective, and timely decisions; perceives the impact and implications of decisions; commits to action, even in uncertain situations, to accomplish goals. Competency 2 Interpersonal Skills From 2009 ALJ Announcement: Shows understanding, friendliness, courtesy, tact, empathy, concern, and politeness to others; develops and maintains effective relationships with others; deals effectively with individuals who are difficult, assertive, hostile, or distressed; relates well to people from varied backgrounds and different situations; is sensitive to cultural diversity, race, gender, disabilities, and other individual differences. Competency 3 Judicial Analysis From 2009 ALJ Announcement: Analyzes, evaluates and weighs all evidence, including technical subject matter; defines issues and makes findings of fact and conclusions of law, which are appropriate to the case; clearly articulates the basis for the outcome. Competency 4 Writing From 2009 ALJ Announcement: Recognizes and uses correct English grammar, punctuation, and spelling; communicates information (for example, facts, ideas, or messages) in writing in a succinct and organized manner; produces written information, which may include technical material, that is appropriate for the intended audience. Competency 5 Judicial Management From 2009 ALJ Announcement: Knows and applies legal, trial, and evidentiary rules and procedures; presides at, participates in, and/or facilitates conferences, hearings, and meetings with sensitivity, diplomacy and impartiality; develops a full and fair record (for example, elicits facts, when appropriate, by examining lay and expert witnesses and by other means); gives all sides a fair opportunity to be heard; works with others to find mutually acceptable solutions. Competency 6 Oral Communication From 2009 ALJ Announcement: Expresses information (for example, conclusions, rationale, ideas or facts) to individuals or groups effectively, taking into account the audience and nature of the information (for example, technical, sensitive, controversial); makes clear and convincing oral presentations; listens to others, attends to nonverbal cues, and responds appropriately. Competency 7 Judicial Decisiveness From American Judicature Society JNC Handbook (Ch 5: Evaluative Criteria): Decisiveness. A trial judge in particular must be capable of making quick decisions under pressure. Often a trial judge will be required to rule on objections as soon as they are raised. Motions, too, will require prompt decisions if cases are to progress. A trial judge must be able to keep cases moving and be willing and able to reach decisions. He or she must be able to quickly assimilate law and facts and to respond to issues raised by counsel with confidence and without hesitation. The judge must be willing to make hard decisions and be able to rule with firmness. An appellate judge also must act decisively to draft and circulate arguments in support of, or in dissent to, draft opinions in order to facilitate the appellate decision-making process. Competency 8 Judicial Temperament (A) From American Judicature Society JNC Handbook (Ch 5: Evaluative Criteria): Judicial temperament. The judgeâs job includes contact with lawyers, members of the public and court employees and requires an inordinate amount of an elusive quality called judicial temperament. Judicial temperament encompasses a variety of noble qualities. One of these qualities is dignity. To be dignified a judge must possess âquiet, tactful ways, and calm yet firm assurance.â6 A jurist with appropriate judicial temperament uses authority gracefully. Judicial temperament also requires sensitivity and understanding. An understanding judge is sensitive to the feelings of those before the court, recognizing that each and every case is important to the participants. Finally, a candidate is not temperamentally suited for the bench unless he or she possesses great patience. Patience is simply the ability to be even-tempered and to exercise restraint in trying situations. (B) From Standards on State Judicial Selection (ABA Standing Committee on Judicial Independence, July 2000): (iv) Judicial Temperament. Judicial temperament includes a commitment to equal justice under law, freedom from bias, ability to decide issues according to law, courtesy and civility, open-mindedness and compassion. Competency 9 Litigation and Courtroom Competence From Standards on State Judicial Selection (ABA Standing Committee on Judicial Independence, July 2000): (iii) Professional Competence. Professional competence includes intellectual capacity, professional and personal judgment, writing and analytical ability, knowledge of the law and breadth of professional experience, including courtroom and trial experience. Candidates for appellate judgeships should further demonstrate scholarly writing and academic talent, and the ability to write to develop a coherent body of law. Competency 10 Problem Solving From OPMâs MOSAIC Competencies: Professional Administrative Occupations 1996-1997 (opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/assessment-and-selection/competencies/mosaic-study-competencies-master-list.pdf): Problem Solving Identifies problems; determines accuracy and relevance of information; uses sound judgment to generate and evaluate alternatives, and to make recommendations. Competency 11 Professionalism From American Judicature Society JNC Handbook (Ch 5: Evaluative Criteria): Integrity. This is another touchstone criterion. The responsibility of judges to make decisions that affect lives and fortunes requires the selection of men and women of unquestioned integrity. At a minimum, integrity means intellectual honesty, moral vigor and professional uprightness. It also requires a sense of honor, trustworthiness and absolute sincerity and reliability. A judge with integrity is unswervingly ethical. Ethical conduct by judges requires, at a minimum, commitment and adherence to the law, the Code of Judicial Conduct and the Code of Professional Responsibility. To emphasize the importance of integrity, and to alert potential candidates to the ethical standards to which judges must adhere, a number of nominating commissions, Nebraska and Utah, for example, send potential candidates a copy of their Code of Judicial Conduct along with the applicant questionnaire. Competency 12 Reasoning From OPMâs MOSAIC Competencies: Professional Administrative Occupations 1996-1997 (opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/assessment-and-selection/competencies/mosaic-study-competencies-master-list.pdf): Reasoning Identifies rules, principles, or relationships that explain facts, data, or other information; analyzes information and makes correct inferences or draws accurate conclusions. Competency 13 Self Management From OPMâs MOSAIC Competencies: Professional Administrative Occupations 1996-1997 (opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/assessment-and-selection/competencies/mosaic-study-competencies-master-list.pdf): Self-Management Sets well-defined and realistic personal goals; displays a high level of initiative, effort, and commitment towards completing assignments in a timely manner; works with minimal supervision; is motivated to achieve; demonstrates responsible behavior. Stop Taking Yourself For Granted
Stop Taking Yourself For Granted Stop Taking Yourself For Granted Executive job seekers may not be giving themselves enough credit by expecting too much.We acknowledge that we take things for granted. Yet we never acknowledge that we take ourselves for granted.Iâve spoken to groups of award nominees where not a single person had any idea what made him or her different from the others. (This wasnât an epidemic of false modesty, either. Thatâs fairly easy to spot.) Every person in the room was genuinely surprised at having been nominated. Some people speculated about what made them different. But, like job hunters, they never made it past unmemorable generalities like, âWell, I guess they appreciated the fact that I am always on time and never missed a client engagement.â Yawn.Never was this more apparent than during a lunch keynote for the Temporary Staffing Association. The group invited me to speak at a ceremony honoring the Temporary Staffing Employee of the Year. There were many amazing nominations: During one Chicago snowstorm when no one else was willing to work, one gentleman in his early 60s rode his bicycle over 15 miles in the snow and arrived with a smile on his face and icicles in his beard. The morning of the event, I arrived early so that I could greet everyone as they registered; I congratulated the nominees and asked the same question: âDo you know why you were nominated?âWith so many high achievers, I fully expected at least a few would have some idea what made them special. But alas, this was not the case.A certain type of person At first, I wondered how so many people could be so clueless about the influence they wield on their organizations. But the more I thought about it, the more it made sense. People with a strong work ethic and the three magic ingredients â" passion, initiative and resourcefulness â" simply canât imagine any other way of doing business. Their brains donât work like that. Maybe you can relate.Internal motivation versus external motivation If you seem to fit the description above, are you aware that not everyone shares your same work ethic? Probably, but you donât compare yourself with the slackers of the world. Instead, you are internally driven. In other words, your inspiration and motivation come from within - not from the hope or expectation of recognition and reward.Appreciating what you bring to the table If you find yourself in a similar situation, you may have to work a little harder to see the world from the perspective of the people who truly appreciate your efforts. You may even have to ask directly. For example, you might find a trusted co-worker and say:âIâm doing a self-assessment to look at my strengths and weaknesses. Would you be willing to share your thoughts about what I do well and where I still need to improve?âIt helps to ask about opportunities for improvement because it will lessen any fears you may have about fishing for compliments. At the same time, when you do hear the compliments, make sure to drill down and get the person to provide specific examples. You will be amazed by what people remember and appreciate. This may seem like an uncomfortable exercise, but it is an important step in marketing yourself effectively. After all, there is no possible way you can communicate what makes you different if you donât know why people appreciate you in the first pla ce.
